The freedom to finally be done with diets

The 'No Time' Myth: Why We Choose Drive-Thrus When Better Options Exist

June 23, 2025β€’3 min read

Have you ever heard yourself say this? "I didn't meal prep this week, so I guess I'll have to hit the drive-thru..."

Let's pause right there.

As a nutrition coach for busy women over 50, I hear this logic all the time. And I get it - I really do. In fact, I caught myself in this exact thinking trap last week. Running late, no prep done, automatically turning my car toward McDonald's.

But here's the question that stopped me in my tracks:

When did "no time to meal prep" become automatically linked to "must eat fast food"?

Let's break down this faulty logic by looking at the real numbers:

The Drive-Thru "Solution":

  • 10-15 minutes waiting in line

  • $7-10 per meal

  • 500-800 empty calories

  • Blood sugar roller coaster

  • Afternoon energy crash

  • Feelings of guilt and defeat

  • Further from your health goals

The No-Prep Reality Check:

  • Quick options that take 3 minutes or less:

  • Grab yogurt + fruit (30 seconds)

  • Pack nuts + protein bar (1 minute)

  • Make overnight oats (1 minute)

  • Blend a protein smoothie (2 minutes)

  • Hard-boiled eggs + toast (3 minutes)

The Truth About "No Time"

Here's what we're not acknowledging: "No time" doesn't actually mean "must eat junk." It's just become our default programming. It's a story we've told ourselves so many times that we believe it's the only option.

But let's look at what you probably already have in your kitchen:

Quick Grab-and-Go Options:

  1. Oatmeal packets + banana

  2. Greek yogurt cups + berries

  3. String cheese + apple

  4. Pre-portioned nuts + dried fruit

  5. Hard-boiled eggs (buy them pre-made!)

  6. Protein bars + pear

  7. Ready-to-drink protein shakes

  8. Whole grain crackers + hummus cups

  9. Pre-cut veggie packs + individual guacamole

  10. Cottage cheese + peach cups

The Financial Reality

Let's talk money for a moment. That daily "quick" drive-thru run?

  • $7 per day

  • $35 per work week

  • $140 per month

  • $1,680 per year

Compare that to stocking your kitchen with grab-and-go options:

  • $2-3 per serving

  • $10-15 per work week

  • $40-60 per month

  • $480-720 per year

That's a potential savings of nearly $1,000 per year - just by changing your "no time" solution!

Breaking the Pattern

Next time you hear yourself say "I don't have time to prep so I HAVE to get fast food," remember:

  1. This is a story, not a fact

  2. You have more options than you think

  3. Better choices don't always require more time

  4. Small decisions add up to big results

Action Steps for Success:

  1. Stock your kitchen with 3-4 grab-and-go options

  2. Keep healthy snacks in your car/purse

  3. Make a list of quick options you enjoy

  4. Plan for busy days (they're going to happen!)

Remember: You don't have to be perfect with meal prep to make healthy choices. Sometimes, the simplest solution is the best one.

Your Turn: What's your go-to "no time" meal? Could you replace it with something quicker and healthier? How can you apply this logic to other meals and snacks? Share in the comments below!
